By late May they stand there, small and well behaved, and three months later they are meant to carry half a metre of fruit. Tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, courgettes and squash do not pull that mass out of thin air, they pull it out of the soil. They belong to the heavy feeders, the hungriest residents of the vegetable garden. Set them into well rotted soil and forget them, and you will often still harvest something. But understand what these plants need and when, and you harvest noticeably more, healthier fruit and plants that hold on until frost. The secret is not an expensive specialty fertiliser, it is the right ratio of nutrients at the right moment.
What a heavy feeder actually is
Gardeners sort vegetables roughly into three groups by appetite. Heavy feeders draw large amounts of nutrients, above all nitrogen, from the soil. That includes almost all fruiting vegetables, plus cabbage and squash. Potatoes do not always fit neatly into that drawer, but in practice you file them here. Medium feeders like carrots or onions get by on less. Light feeders such as corn salad, beans or herbs actually prefer leaner soil.
This grouping is not bureaucracy, it is the heart of crop rotation. A heavy feeder bed is exhausted after the season. Next year a medium or light feeder goes there, and the soil gets a breather. Plant tomatoes on the same spot year after year and you harvest ever less and ever sicker plants.

The one mistake: too much nitrogen
Nitrogen is the nutrient for leaf mass. In spring, when the young plant should bulk up fast, it is welcome. But from flowering the balance tips. Keep piling on nitrogen and the plant builds leaf instead of fruit. It turns dark green, lush, almost tropical, and still carries disappointingly little.
Worse still: nitrogen driven tissue is soft and thin walled. Aphids pierce it more easily, fungal spores find more surface to attack, and the classic summer diseases from late blight to powdery mildew spread faster. A well overfed stand looks vigorous and is in truth vulnerable.
Nitrogen makes the plant handsome, potassium makes the fruit good.
Old gardener's rule
The most common route into the nitrogen trap is fresh or half rotted manure, plus high dose compound fertiliser or well meant nettle brew in the fruiting phase. Nettle feed is nitrogen rich and belongs at the start of the season, not in high summer.
Potassium, the quiet hero of the fruiting phase
Potassium regulates the water balance of the cell, controls the opening of the stomata and is involved in sugar transport and flavour formation. For fruiting vegetables it is the decisive nutrient as soon as the first flower opens. A tomato well supplied with potassium tastes more intense, forms firmer skins, cracks less after rain and rides out dry spells more calmly.
You lay the base supply in spring. Two to three litres of mature compost per planting hole, worked in shallowly, deliver nitrogen, potassium and trace elements in a mild, slowly flowing ratio. Compost is not a turbo, it is a store: it feeds over weeks and at the same time builds humus that holds water. For many home gardens this single dose reaches surprisingly far, especially for squash and courgette in the open bed.
If compost alone is not enough, potassium-rich supplements come in. Classics are comfrey feed, potassium-based vegetable fertilisers or, very sparingly, wood ash from untreated wood. Wood ash is strongly alkaline and delivers plenty of potassium, but also lime: a small handful per square metre and season is enough, more shifts the pH too far upward.
Comfrey, botanically Symphytum officinale, is the potassium plant par excellence. Its deep roots pull nutrients from layers other plants cannot reach. From the leaves you brew a feed markedly richer in potassium than nettle, which makes it a perfect match for the fruiting phase. A few comfrey plants in a garden corner supply the whole season, and you can cut them two to three times.
Reading leaf colour
You do not need a soil lab to gauge the nutrient status. The plant shows it to you. What matters is that you distinguish between young and old leaves, because nutrients travel differently.
Rich, even green

Iron or magnesium deficiency, often at too high a pH after too much lime or ash. An Epsom salt solution over the leaf helps quickly.
Brown, leathery, sunken patches at the blossom end of tomato, pepper or courgette are blossom end rot. This is not a fertiliser shortage in the classic sense, but a calcium transport problem, almost always triggered by uneven water supply. Even mulching and watering helps more than any fertiliser.
A feeding plan across the season
You do not feed fruiting vegetables by calendar alone, but by growth phase. The rough frame for most gardens in Germany looks like this, and the calendar weeks shift by one to two weeks depending on region and weather.
- Planting, roughly CW 18 to 21: Base dose of compost into the planting hole. Then two to three weeks of rest, so the roots go deep and do not turn lazy.
- Establishment phase, CW 21 to 24: On lean soil a mild nitrogen-leaning dose, such as diluted nettle feed, to build up the foliage.
- Flowering and fruit set, from CW 24: Switch to potassium. Now the comfrey rhythm begins, a diluted dose every seven to ten days.
- Full cropping, CW 28 to 34: Keep feeding potassium-rich as long as the plant carries. Courgette and cucumber need the most in this stretch because they let you harvest almost daily.
- Wind down, from CW 35: Let the feeding taper off. The plant should ripen its last fruit, not push new growth.
Pots and containers follow different rules. The small soil volume is emptied quickly, so you feed weaker there but more often, ideally liquid with the watering. A tomato in a container wants its potassium portion practically every week from flowering onward, otherwise it stalls.
Organic or mineral
Both routes work, they just tick differently. Organic fertilisers from compost through horn shavings to liquid feed act slowly, because soil organisms have to unlock them first. That is good natured, hard to overdose and builds soil life over the long run. The downside: in cold spring soil little happens, because the microbes are still asleep.
Mineral fertilisers act at once and can be dosed precisely, but they forgive mistakes less well and do nothing good for soil life. For the home garden the organic track is usually the more relaxed choice: compost once as a store, then liquid feed as a targeted top-up. Anyone gardening in containers or wanting to fix an acute deficiency fast reaches for mineral liquid fertiliser at that spot.
